<p>There is one thing that YouTuber franks2732 got right in his video &#8220;<a href="http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=sClDd564D5Y">Bigotry &#038; Libertarians</a>.&#8221; Capitalism, which I take him to mean the exchange of privately owned goods, would not prevent discrimination. For good or bad, people discriminate all the time among various choices, of course. If they are wise, people discriminate between those things that are injurious to their health and those things that are beneficial.</p>
<p>Even for the type of racial discrimination addressed in the video, a society of free exchange could not prevent racism. Nor could a free market prevent people from calling others hurtful names or falling in love with losers. For that matter, a free market could not guarantee that people would make good decisions either.<span id="more-807"></span></p>
<p>Those are only things that people can do. They have to take responsibility for their actions, and in free societies, individuals bear the responsibility for their deeds.</p>
<p>The YouTuber may not be aware of this, but it simply is not the case that &#8220;Laws passed by governments because people want to bring about social change to a society do [prevent discrimination].&#8221; Prior to the Civil Rights era, most of the government&#8217;s laws &#8220;to bring change to society&#8221; actively promoted discrimination against women, blacks and other racial and religious minorities.</p>
<p>In <a href="https://secure.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/en/wiki/Jim_Crow_laws">Jim Crow</a> America, racial discrimination was <em>de jure</em> the law, including in many parts of the South as early as the Reconstruction Era in the 1870s.</p>
<p>These laws were heavily enforced for the very reason that existing government-privileged markets for labor, transportation and education could not be sustained under even a modicum of honest competition. White racists were not willing to trust that voluntary compliance among other privileged whites would maintain racial segregation. When the law was not enough, Klu Klux Klan terrorism was visited upon businesses not willing to keep blacks &#8220;in their place.&#8221;</p>
<p>To franks2732&#8242;s credit, he is not completely oblivious to this idea, even citing how the legal enshrinement of apartheid provided for systematic racial discrimination in South Africa.</p>
<p>In Montgomery, the bus company had unsuccessfully petitioned the city to repeal segregated riding after a prolonged boycott led by Martin Luther King, Jr, whose later arrest gave prominence to a nationwide civil rights movement. Think how much more beneficial those protesters&#8217; actions were than if they had simply sought a political compromise with the city. The bus company&#8217;s motivation was not to bring about greater social solidarity, but simple self-interest. It may not have been the most honorable intention, but it was the right thing to do.</p>
<p>franks2732 completely bypassed the fact that nonviolent civil disobedience rendered a great number of racist laws unenforceable. Through direct action, people were able to achieve a lasting social movement (before ultimately being co-opted). As <a href="http://www.thefreemanonline.org/departments/it-just-aint-so/opposing-the-civil-rights-act-means-opposing-civil-rights/">Charles Johnson noted</a>,</p>
<blockquote><p><em>Woolworth’s lunch counters weren’t desegregated by Title II.</em> The sit-in movement did that. From the Montgomery Bus Boycott onward, the Freedom Movement had won victories, town by town, building movements, holding racist institutions socially and economically accountable. The sit-ins proved the real-world power of the strategy: In Greensboro, N.C., nonviolent sit-in protests drove Woolworth’s to abandon its whites-only policy by July 1960. The Nashville Student Movement, through three months of sit-ins and boycotts, convinced merchants to open all downtown lunch counters in May the same year. Creative protests and grassroots pressure campaigns across the South changed local cultures and dismantled private segregation without legal backing.</p></blockquote>
<p>Another claim in the video is that anti-discrimination laws have rendered racial conditions such that &#8220;There are no more discriminations&#8221; [sic]. I am puzzled by what he could possible mean. He either meant that racial discrimination no longer exists, which is laughable. Or he meant that racial discrimination is no longer formally legal.</p>
<p>Neither is true. Racial discrimination is still covertly practiced; it is just not as blatant as it had been under Jim Crow. In the private sector, racial discrimination just takes other, legal forms. Meanwhile, governments actively target blacks in the United States through various drug prohibitions, minimum wage laws, licensing regulations and zoning restrictions.</p>
<p>That leaves us with a problem. How then can racism be ended? As a practical concern, we cannot rely on the state to solve the problem. That would just give more incentive for government agents to make the problem worse so that they would accumulate greater authority.</p>
<p>In the past, I have been guilty of just saying that the market&#8217;s economic incentives will put an end to racial discrimination, and to a large extent that may still be the case. We have to remember also that we are the market; the market is just a nexus of our decisions. If racism is to end, laws are not going to do it. They may come after the fact to give a social movement the government&#8217;s endorsement. But racism and all other forms of authoritarianism will come to an end (or completely be marginalized from society) when people are not longer willing to tolerate it. In a fully libertarian manner, social and economic pressures, such as those employed in the civil rights struggle, returns power back to individuals and not to the state.</p>

			<content:encoded><![CDATA[<p>Some of the latest work posted to the DFW Alliance of the Libertarian Left&#8217;s blog are <a href="http://dallas.libertarianleft.org/blog/2010/10/glbt-community-making-progress-in-dfw">a commentary supportive</a> of the efforts of those in the GLBT community to bring awareness to some difficult issues and an announcement of <a href="http://dallas.libertarianleft.org/blog/2010/11/event-the-production-of-security">a new reading club event</a>.</p>
<p>Fort Worth councilman Joel Burns received nationwide media attention last month for his speech during a city meeting in which he revealed some of the torment and abuse he faced as a gay teen. I also address the controversy of a transsexual Dallas high school student who was denied an opportunity to run for homecoming queen. I conclude with some remarks on the underlying source of the cultural challenges faced by those with an alternative sexual orientation and how libertarian principles can be used to overcome them.</p>
<p>On Dec. 6, DFW ALL will host reading club a featuring &#8220;The Production of Security&#8221; by Gustave De Molinari, who is considered by many to be the father (perhaps grandfather) of market anarchism. In his classic work from 1849, Molinari analyzes the possibility for the stateless supply of defense and arbitration services.</p>

			<content:encoded><![CDATA[<p>It is <a href="http://www.marxists.org/archive/lenin/works/1919/jun/23.htm">typically conceded</a> that a starving man is not free, and this marks the alleged defining flaw of a free market, the commoditization of labor. The contention is that the relationship between employers and employees is really no different than the relationship between muggers and their victims: obey or die. Typically, market opponents raise this objection to the classical liberal meaning of freedom as the negation of physical force from interpersonal relationships. They contend that meaningful freedom must also include the material means to act on that freedom.</p>
<p>But the anti-market conception of freedom is only recognizing the “yoke of external nature,” as anarcho-communist <a href="http://www.marxists.org/reference/archive/bakunin/works/1871/man-society.htm">Mikhail Bakunin</a> called it. Or like Wesley Bertrand on a recent <a href="http://completeliberty.libsyn.com/episode_118_the_alleged_ideal_of_socialism">&#8220;Complete Liberty&#8221; podcast</a> said, “<em>Life</em> is the freedom to starve.” This yoke cannot be removed so long as we are alive. It is the everlasting condition underlying every action we make: to live or die, to improve our material condition or suffer. To say that a starving man is not free is to reverse cause and effect. Consumption only becomes possible after production. It is only through production that an individual can provide for his well-being. A starving man has fewer opportunities to take advantage of his freedom, but also at no other time is his freedom of more value. Without it, his mind would be paralyzed to think, ensuring his destruction.</p>
<p>The root conflict between my understanding of liberty and someone like Bakunin, for example, is I believe that indirect and direct physical force are the only means of violating someone’s rights. All libertarians committed to non-aggression would agree that if a starving man is prevented by physical force from engaging in productive action, then he is not free. Bakunin is correct that the right to liberty is only of significance in the realm of interpersonal relationships, but I contend that that the only way of impeding someone&#8217;s rights is by force. We can be victims of our neighbor’s irrationality or bigotry. But so long as that injustice is not manifested in the unauthorized use or abuse of another’s rightly controlled property or person, the damage is psychological and not physical. We remain free to use our minds and the products of our mind as we see fit. We remain free to use the property in question to inform others of the injustice we received.</p>
<p>For those of political power, freedom is an outright threat to the existence of their power. That is because its origin is vested in violence and sought through favoritism, so the static quantity of its influence must increasingly become cartelized into fewer and fewer hands. That system can distribute wealth, but it cannot create it. Their power extents only so far as they can project authority over others or convince others they too can benefit from that power. For those of economic power, they are insulated from the harsh realities of tyrannical governments and can position themselves to profit from partnering with the state. So it is natural for the two to protect each of their interests. One has a legal monopoly on coercion, but not the ability to create wealth of its own. The other has wealth, but not supposed the authority to initiate the use of physical force.</p>
<p>It is important not to forget that political and economic interests acquire power from fundamentally different sources. The former confiscates wealth and subjugates individuals as a matter of course, while the latter serves to disperse power through mutually beneficial exchange (to the degree it does not cling to political power). Economic power, when not acquired by physical force, is a product of the limitless creative process, consensual regulation, market competition, and organized labor.</p>
<p>Confusing the two as one in the same leads to the support for less liberty and less opportunity. An example of this is the famed anarchist Noam Chomsky, who actively supports the expansion of state control. While justly viewing the state as a tool of domination and privilege, he looks to the state for protection from the same interests he believes are manipulating it in their favor.</p>
<p>In an interview, <a href="http://www.chomsky.info/interviews/199808--.htm">he said</a>:</p>
<blockquote><p>I&#8217;m not in favour of people being in cages. On the other hand I think people ought to be in cages if there&#8217;s a sabre-toothed tiger wandering around outside and if they go out of the cage the sabre-toothed tiger will kill them. &#8230; And there is a cage, namely the state, which to some extent is under popular control. The cage is protecting people from predatory tyrannies so there is a temporary need to maintain the cage, and even to extend the cage.</p></blockquote>
<p>Under a banner of protecting people from the infringement of political privilege, Chomsky has become a tool of entrenched political interests. It is also not lost on me that economic power disparities can be seized upon and manipulated in favor of one side of an exchange more than another. No political model can guarantee that people will act justly. But one can minimize the consequences of injustice and promote the occurrence of mutually positive interactions. To do this, a just society would need a widespread recognition for private property rights, but that is not sufficient to ensure that freedom would have much meaning. Here, I agree with Bakunin that individuals are only capable of achieving emancipation once they have recognized their same humanity in others. As Mary Ruwart said in &#8220;Healing Our World,&#8221; when we seek to control others, we find ourself the one controlled.</p>
<p>As a practical matter, a lasting libertarian society would more likely come about by a widespread cultural shift of accepting the choices of others, treating others equally as individuals, and becoming less obedient to oppressors. Most people do not become libertarians out of a duty to the non-aggression principle. They are attracted to the sense of justice and fairness inherent in equal liberty.</p>
<p>A free market would be a more abundant society and would radically expand the scope of economic opportunity. It would also be more efficient at helping the disabled and poor, who are often the most devastated victims of political favoritism. Without the expense of tax collection and tax compliance, together which gobble up two-thirds of welfare revenue received, those in need would experience dramatic increases in charity. It should go without saying that when I am talking about the free market, I am not apologizing for economic conditions as they exists now in America or elsewhere. I am working analytically to explain the economic consequences of an unhampered market process. To the extent that an unhampered market existed, one could expect these consequences to follow.</p>
<p>A practiced and still principled way of promoting a libertarian society is by addressing people’s legitimate concerns of what would happen to the less fortunate in a free society. Direct action, like mutual aid, social ostracism, and counter-economics, should be potent models to demonstrate the validity of equal liberty while also challenging the status quo. The downside of charity is that it tends to be a short-lived solution, so I do believe mutual aid would be a better way of promoting social harmony and overcoming the root cause of despair — if we are going to be free, not by vote, but as a matter of virtue.</p>

<p>Last week, Supreme Court Justice nominee Elena Kagan, the White House&#8217;s solicitor general, was being questioned by Sen. Tom Coburn (Okla.) about natural rights.</p>
<p><a href="http://reason.com/blog/2010/07/01/is-eating-fruits-and-vegetable">The day before</a>, he had unsuccessfully tried to get Kagan to concede that the constitution&#8217;s Commerce Clause does not give government the power to mandate by force (&#8220;Law is force,&#8221; Bastiat said) that Americans must consume fruits and vegetables. Kagan, by the way, never answered definitively but seems to say that non-economic activity, which presumably means eating, falls outside the scope of federal powers. Yet, in the case of marijuana, just possessing the substance was considered a commercial activity if the law were part of a larger regulatory (control) framework. So a stand-alone law mandating everyone in America eat their veggies would be unconstitutional, but if it were part of a national health care initiative, it is probably a go.</p>
<p>In his follow-up questions the next day, Coburn asked if self-defense was a natural right pre-existing the constitution. Kagan&#8217;s response was revealing. <a href="http://edition.cnn.com/TRANSCRIPTS/1006/30/rlst.02.html">According to a CNN transcript</a>, she said,&#8221;Senator Coburn, I believe that the Constitution is an extraordinary document, and I&#8217;m not saying I do not believe that there are rights pre-existing the Constitution and the laws. But my job as a justice is to enforce the Constitution and the laws.&#8221;</p>
<p>I am not defending the constitution by any means, nor do I expect the government to abide by its own rules and laws. However, it should be pointed out when government people do not live up to their own rules. Kagan is directly in conflict with the ninth amendment of the Bill of Rights, which states that &#8220;the people&#8221; possess other rights not previously enumerated. Famously, the founders said that we are endowed &#8220;with certain unalienable rights &#8230;. That to secure these rights, Governments are instituted among Men.&#8221; For Kagan to say &#8220;I don&#8217;t have a view of what are natural rights, independent of the Constitution&#8221; means she is completely unfit by the government&#8217;s own standards to serve on the Supreme Court.</p>
<p>I cannot just fault Kagan. Though widespread, the idea that government should exist to defend our liberty and property is already completely contradictory. Government systematically assaults our liberty and property. From &#8220;all men are created equal&#8221; to &#8220;Congress shall have Power To lay and collect Taxes&#8221; signals a complete defiance of inalienable rights and the natural law of equal liberty. Taxation is modeled on the idea of paying royalties for the privilege of engaging in commerce, owning property or earning a living.</p>
<p>I am aware Kagan is all but guaranteed to be confirmed. She will be one of nine people who ultimately interpret what the constitution means. So when it comes down to it, the rule of law is still the rule of men (and three women). But through indoctrination and guilt-laden propaganda, people have come to accept and embrace the authority over them. The whole show — the law, the authority and, ultimately, the government — are just manifestations of bad ideas.</p>
<p>Ideas fuel fear and avarice. You cannot shoot an idea or dynamite a myth. They are invincible to violence, even self-defense. Luckily, ideas also fuel truth and beauty.</p>
<p>Liberty supporters are at a distinct advantage though. Lies require constant supervision and constant maintenance. Lies must be heaped upon lies. Truth and beauty stand on their own. Like scientists, philosophers and intellectuals must transmit their discoveries if their work is to have any value. In business, that is the role of the entrepreneur, to turn concepts into consumables. For truth and beauty to have any power, they too must be communicated and acted upon to be made real. They must be practiced. That is the most admirable role of the liberty activist. That is how we will get our certainty and our freedom now, by living it.</p>

Both liberals and conservatives support a violent organization that usurps individual rights and autonomy by its very existence. They may do so for different reasons, but both are reactionary hypocrites or at least very confused.</p>
<p>I do think those terms have a  legitimate use in referencing the means and the scope to which those  means are used.</p>
<p>With that said, Darian Worden <a href="http://blogofbile.com/2010/03/22/darian-worden-speaks-about-left-libertarianism-201003-alt-expo/trackback/">gave a great presentation</a> (below) on why libertarianism is a left ideology. 			<content:encoded><![CDATA[<p>The phrase &#8220;tilting at windmills&#8221; is often meant as a swipe at someone who incorrectly perceives a non-existent or idealized enemy and pursues a course of action based on that misunderstanding. The phrase was inspired by the the character <a title="Don Quixote" href="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Don_Quixote">Don Quixote</a>, who battles make-believe giants taking the form of windmills dotting the countryside in Miguel de Cervantes&#8217; novel.</p>
<p>For minarchists, constitutionalists, and so-called patriots, their primary path for reigning in the abuses of the federal and state governments has been through the conventional political process — electoral politics, lobbying, and petitioning. It&#8217;s been a long path too, since 1787, when the nation&#8217;s second constitution was formulated.</p>
<p>More precisely, limited-state supporters have tried to scale back the powers of the federal government since President George Washington marched <em>conscripted</em> troops on Pennsylvania <a href="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Whiskey_Rebellion">whiskey tax resistors</a> in 1794. Many look back at the early days of the federal government with starry-eyed vision of a glorious republic that was the hallmark of what a government ought to be. Never mind that, at the time of its inception, there was never a common interpretation of the what the constitution meant or how far the federal powers reached. What they forget was that while, yes, the government was relatively small and insignificant in most people&#8217;s lives, that was because it was a new government. It was paying off a tremendous war debt and was biding its time to gain legitimacy. As Secretary of the Treasury Alexander Hamilton noted, the purpose of the whiskey tax had less to do with paying down the debt than &#8220;to advance and secure the power of the new federal government.&#8221;</p>
<h2>Long Odds, Losing Payoff</h2>
<p>Despite over 200 years of trying to reform the system, government at all levels continues to grow at an ever-expanding pace. Since the likes of Adam Smith and Thomas Jefferson, advocates of limited government have failed to restrain government to its self-imposed, self-enforced, and self-interpreted constitution. Today, over half of Americans &#8220;<a href="http://www.csmonitor.com/2007/0416/p01s04-usec.html">now receive significant income from government programs</a>,&#8221; according to one study. (That estimate is understated because even those who work in the private sector and have nothing to do with government contracts can also ride on the government&#8217;s dime if they support the wars in Iraq and Afghanistan, for example. They get to shift the costs of those wars onto future generations through deficit financing.) The figure above has nearly doubled since the 1950s, when just over a quarter of Americans relied on government for significant support. With aging baby boomers set to retire in the coming decade, the number is only going to increase. Limited-state advocates were unsuccessful 50 years ago, when government had far less influence. Now, with a 100 percent fiat printing press at its fingertips and 12-year indoctrination camps under its control, the chances of rolling back government by using government are even bleaker.</p>
<p>With data like this, is there any reason to believe that Americans who directly or indirectly receive government handouts are going to support limiting those handouts? After all, Social Security and government heath care recipients, who represent the largest direct beneficiaries, &#8220;earned&#8221; their entitlements.</p>
<p>Anecdotally, I know someone who believes a clandestine band of government officials orchestrated the 9/11 attacks for the fortune of the military-congressional complex yet actively sought and attained a position at one of the largest military contractors in the world. When asked to reconcile this belief and taking a job with a believed co-conspirator in the 9/11 attacks, it was &#8220;for the benefits,&#8221; I was told.</p>
<p>The election process requires 50 percent of the vote plus one. The odds of electing small-government advocates en mass is even longer considering those who receive government support are more likely to participate in the electoral process than others. Also consider that those who receive government support have family and friends. Is it reasonable to expect people, no matter how principled, to vote to dump their loved ones off Social Security or deny their grandparents access to a Medicare doctor? In my heart, if I had to cast the deciding vote, I could not do it. Maybe I am a hypocrite (fair enough), but I don&#8217;t think I&#8217;m much different from traditional voters. The social and familial pressures I&#8217;d face would be unbearable.</p>
<p>When I talk to people about reducing or eliminating a government program, it&#8217;s always the same objection. &#8220;What about the poor and the elderly?&#8221; I have no doubt that they would be cared for since nearly everyone has the same objection and government <a href="http://liberalaw.blogspot.com/2010/03/poverty-without-state.html">actively creates poverty</a>. (I would be a little concerned if no one expressed concern for their well being.) Those concerns are appeals to our decency and ethics. Yet, the most prominent case being made for smaller government is on <a href="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Teleology">teleology grounds</a>, a utilitarian argument, in effect conceding the ethical high ground to violence and theft. How backward.</p>
<p>A possible reason most limited-government supporters do not make a deontological (or ethics-based) case for liberty is because it would reveal their logical contradiction. They cannot support liberty, peace and a limited state, which necessarily is based on aggressive violence by its very existence, as any non-consensual territorial monopoly would be. Limited-state supporters and maximum-state supporters, thus, have already agreed that aggressive violence is necessary to solve social problems. The only disagreement is over how much violence is necessary.</p>
<h2>Ignoring Imaginary Giants</h2>
<p>As I see it, electoral politics is our Quixotic imaginary giant. It&#8217;s a distraction. No matter how many laws are on the books, <a href="http://dallas.libertarianleft.org/education/links/charles-rad-geek-johnson-chats-it-up-with-mhd-about-agorism/trackback">all that matters</a> is government currently has the legitimacy and the power to enforce them. If we undermine its legitimacy, its power won&#8217;t matter. They will still hold <a href="http://freedomain.blogspot.com/2006/11/gun-in-room.html">the gun in the room</a>, but we will all know they have no bullets. We don&#8217;t need to convince a majority of our ideas either. We need a determined minority who will withdraw their consent in spirit and in practice. Many already have. <a href="http://georgedonnelly.com/agorism/how-to-start-doing-agorism/trackback">It&#8217;s easy to get started</a>. They practice their trade outside the strictures of government regulation, enjoying the benefits of an unregulated open market. <a href="http://www.homelandstupidity.us/2010/02/05/liberty-conspiracy-2-4-10-tarrin-lupo-on-black-markets/">Others can do the same</a> and in such a way as to build trusted, decentralized networks of traders and entrepreneurs who directly and immediately benefit from these ideas.</p>
<p>I don&#8217;t propose abandoning the electoral process entirely. So long as a majority of people give the concept of democracy some weight, it provides a free soap box to spread our ideas. I wouldn&#8217;t look to electoral progress as a sign of our influence either, as the conventional political process is a lagging indicator of intellectual progress. Part of the reason that conventional politics can only be practiced marginally is because it demands &#8220;compliance with, acceptance of, and payment to its institutions,&#8221; as <a href="http://wconger.blogspot.com/2008/10/our-enemy-party.html">Samuel Edward Konkin III</a> said.</p>
<p>Government enjoys the tacit approval of Americans to belligerently harass them and confiscate their wealth so the military and government-founded corporations can belligerently attack and confiscate the wealth of poorer peasants in other countries. There is nothing redeeming about it. It is extortion. But people put up with it because the devil they know is better than the devil they don&#8217;t know. We can cast a light on the possibilities of what freedom looks like by practicing it ourselves and leading by example. What could be more libertarian?</p>
<p>If we want to win, we&#8217;ve got to stop playing by the government&#8217;s approved rules. &#8220;If voting changed anything, they&#8217;d make it illegal,&#8221; as Emma Goldman quipped.</p>
<p>Instead of trying to free an entire country, we begin somewhere we have control — ourselves — making steady pragmatic progress individual by individual, and eventually social institutions will reflect these values we hold.</p>

<p>Leonard Read, the founder of the <a href="http://fee.org/">Foundation for Economic Education</a>, said principles are not compromised; they are abandoned. Principles, by their nature, are utilized or they are not.</p>
<p>That is an important reminder for those who believe the maximum role of government should be the protection of life, liberty, and property — which I think, logically construed, means self-government; however, I respect that others disagree. Our time is going to be most wisely spent improving ourselves and building relationships with like-minded liberty people. Even still, while the conventional political process is still dominant, there are ways for principled people to use political tools for their own benefit.</p>
<p>The conventional political dichotomy is a struggle between short-term opportunism and long-term progress. I think there is a simple reconciliation that can be made between the two camps. That is, under no circumstances, never ever, should we ever support an expansion in the role of government or a further restriction on a peaceful person&#8217;s liberty. Second, any policy support should be done with the explicit purpose of decreasing the role of government and directly benefiting peaceful individuals.</p>
<p>Any strategy or policy goals that we recommend or follow should be consistent with the purpose of restoring individual liberty and responsibility. I understand the importance of intermediate goals or markers to help fully achieve our ultimate purpose. But our means of achieving that purpose should not be contradictory to that end. For example, a lot of politicians try to justify tax cuts because they believe it will actually increase the total revenues to the government treasury. I believe this is wrong and sends an inconsistent message.</p>
<p>The goal of a tax cut should be to reduce the burden of government. Again, we should not advocate the re-legalization of cannabis on the grounds that it will raise tax revenues, but because prohibition is immoral and counterproductive. Expanding government and further restricting the liberty of others to correct another ill-fated government policy is an abandonment of principle. As Ron Paul said, &#8220;Few Americans understand that all government action is inherently coercive.&#8221; Reducing the level of coercion in people&#8217;s lives is a worthy goal.</p>
<h2>Principles in Practice</h2>
<p>The goals that we have should be radical — not liberal- or conservative-lite. This serves two purposes. First, it provides cover for not-so-radical views to be considered more mainstream, thus limiting the fear of ostracism people might have for holding these slightly less radical views. It provides an objective guidepost — like a lighthouse — for gauging the success of our efforts during darker times.</p>
<p>I would also like to suggest two methods of communicating these ideas. We should definitely take the time, on an intellectual basis, to refute anti-liberty or collectivist ideas. But we must acknowledge that the people advocating these mistaken ideas are not dimwitted. In fact, many know exactly how they benefit from these policies. They are ripping us off, so we must make direct, populist appeals that reveal that fact.</p>
<p>By its nature, government is crude and unaccountable, so there will be an infinite supply of aggrieved individuals. Ideally, that means that we don&#8217;t have to convert individuals fully to the virtue of liberty before taking action together. Over time, I hope that those who are &#8220;liberty minus one&#8221; or &#8220;liberty minus whatever&#8221; come to see the error of their ways.</p>
<h2>Some Ideas to Bat Around</h2>
<p>Sometimes, pick losing issues to get the message out by presenting a pro-liberty analysis. I&#8217;m not saying be a stick-in-the-mud. The situation might provide an opportunity to get some free media publicity or lay the groundwork for winning progress on the issue in the future. Liberals have deployed this technique by pushing socialized health insurance and environmental regulations.</p>
<p>Now, I don&#8217;t even know how possible this next one is. Those arrested for committing consensual crimes could be high-target prospects for the liberty message. When I&#8217;m passing out <a href="http://fija.org/">Fully Informed Jury Association</a> literature on <a href="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Jury_nullification">jury nullification</a>, those called for jury duty are naturally receptive to the material I am providing. I&#8217;ll usually stay a little past the time when potential jurors are due to report in downtown Fort Worth in order to catch any stranglers. When I do, I just happen to pass out literature to defendants, and they are just as interested in the concept of jury nullification as potential jurors, if not more so. There has got to be a way of contacting those folks by getting ahold of  some public records.</p>

<p>This is the same point I made in a post <a href="http://whoplanswhom.com/blog/2010/01/for-rules-not-rulers/">earlier this month</a>. Committed libertarians have not made any progress electorally because they are not willing to scratch enough backs, and if they were willing to scratch enough backs they wouldn&#8217;t be committed libertarians any longer. It is not simply a small-government versus a big-government mentality. It&#8217;s electoral libertarians or constitutionalists versus a multitude of warhawks, rent seekers, and stripes of big-government conservative and liberal social reformers who are more than willing to trade favors. Those are entrenched groups, and they find that big government suites their needs.</p>
<p>Before those groups came to power, Ludwig von Mises published &#8220;Human Action&#8221;, the most complete case for classical liberalism, and &#8220;Socialism&#8221;, which described the calculation problem of centralized economic planning. Leonard Read opened the <a href="http://fee.org/">Foundation of Economic Education</a>, aiding the early careers of F.A. Hayek, Murray Rothbard, and Henry Hazlitt. Ayn Rand championed the heroic nature of the individual. Their support for electoral politics was understandable given government&#8217;s popularity in the 1940s and 50s; but they failed to stop government growth when government was much less intrusive and when it was a tiny fraction of its current size. All the things that have happened since — the<a href="http://www.independent.org/newsroom/article.asp?id=1941"> trillion dollar-per-year</a> empire, the instillation of dictatorial client states in South America and the Middle East and the subsequent &#8220;<a href="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Blowback_%28intelligence%29">blowback</a>,&#8221; the hundreds of thousands of foreign civilians killed by American forces, and the <a href="http://freedominourtime.blogspot.com/2010/01/hurting-people-for-living.html">authoritarian law enforcement tactic</a> leveled against American civilians — happened despite their work. Those tragedies and many more happened anyways.</p>
<p>The fear is that liberty would be in full-scale retreat and that greater atrocities would have taken place had libertarians not participated in electoral politics. There&#8217;s a case to be made there, but it is speculation. What isn&#8217;t speculation is that <a href="http://www.usgovernmentspending.com/downchart_gs.php?year=1850_2010&amp;view=1&amp;expand=&amp;units=p&amp;fy=fy10&amp;chart=F0-total&amp;bar=0&amp;stack=1&amp;size=t&amp;title=US%20Government%20Spending%20As%20Percent%20Of%20GDP&amp;state=US&amp;color=c&amp;local=s">government spending</a> as a part of the economy is at an all-time high, and everyone expects it to stay on the current trajectory indefinitely. Most Americans still <a href="http://people-press.org/report/550/">support pre-emptive war</a> and <a href="http://www.alternet.org/rights/139993/how_americans_came_to_support_torture,_in_five_steps/">torture for anyone the government labels a terrorist</a>. In Michael Cloud&#8217;s book &#8220;<a href="http://www.theadvocates.org/secrets.html">Secrets of Libertarian Persuasion</a>,&#8221; he cares to use the Weight Watchers Test to gauge the promises by politicians of reducing the size of government, referring to the famous diet plan in which participants meet regularly to weigh themselves in front of other members. He said:</p>
<blockquote><p>The Weight Watchers Test of government lets us know where we are, which direction we&#8217;re moving &#8230; and how fast we&#8217;re going.</p>
<p>The Weight Watchers Test of government frees us from sleight-of-mouth and political illusions.</p>
<p>It offers us the facts, the truth:</p>
<p>Are we moving toward bigger and bigger Big Government &#8230; or getting closer and closer to individual liberty, personal responsibility, and small government?</p>

<p>According to the Weight Watchers Test, libertarians have failed and failed more miserably than anyone else I know. (I include myself in that criticism.) The government has grown from arguably the freest non-colonial government in all of history to the most dangerous existing threat to humanity (considering the military arsenal at a president&#8217;s disposal and their predecessor&#8217;s historical willingness to use it). A limited government has the perverse tendency of growing immensely since lifting many regulations and securing relative stability makes it possible to generate astounding amounts of wealth, allowing the <a href="http://reason.com/blog/2010/01/25/news-flash-entitlement-spendin">government parasite</a> to grow largely discretely until the point where the parasite of government becomes so entrenched that government and the market almost appear co-dependent and inseparable.</p>
<p>There are three possible reasons why I think libertarianism has lost political ground. First, we could be wrong, and libertarians fail to understand the scope and circumstances to which coercion should play in human interaction to promote prosperity. Philosophically, I think libertarians (those who support the maximum attainable role of individual liberty) are right. Human beings are the most prosperous, yet fragile, animals on earth. So I don&#8217;t think humans have progressed because of our extraordinary physical traits. It is because of the human mind and its reasoning ability. So it seems that the negation of the reasoning mind by initiating force is detrimental to the fruits of human progress. I appreciate Ayn Rand&#8217;s comment that &#8220;All the reasons which make the initiation of physical force an evil, make the retaliatory use of physical force a moral imperative.&#8221;</p>
<p>Second, libertarians may have failed due to a lack of effort. For this, I refer to the Ron Paul&#8217;s presidential campaign of 2008. In one day in November of 2007, his supporters raised over $4.3 million. A month later, supporters exhausted over $6 million in a single day, a record for the largest fundraiser in the history of politics. Libertarians are unlikely to ever find someone as honest and distinguished as Paul. He got more media attention than any ideological libertarian before, yet he <a href="http://www.msnbc.msn.com/id/21660914">rarely garnered more than 10 percent</a> in Republican primaries despite the thousands of YouTube videos and millions of dollars invested. Even if Paul ran again, I&#8217;m doubtful that level of enthusiasm could be reproduced.</p>
<p>Third, maybe libertarians have tried the wrong strategy of clinging to government strictures to achieve intellectual inroads. Instead of trying to liberate the entire country, we could try to focus on something of which we have some control — ourselves and our personal relationships.</p>
<p>A belief in the maximum role of individual liberty is inherently an individualist philosophy. That means taking responsibility for our own liberty, just as we take responsibility for our own welfare — instead of giving that power to middlemen, the politicians. We can &#8220;be the change,&#8221; as Ghandi said, and lead by example to thwart the arbitrary controls others seek to impose on us. In that way, our ideals, cascading individual by individual, will eventually be reflected in the institution of government to the point where it is commonly accepted that government is no longer necessary. I don&#8217;t have to wait for the whole country to shift before I take responsibility for my own life and enjoy the benefits of living by honest, consistent principles. It can be achieved by taking peaceful <a href="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Direct_action">direct action</a> through education, outreach, and agorism.</p>
<p>What if Rothbard, Mises, Hayek, Rand, and Hazlitt had worked outside the system 50 years ago? Imagine how much further liberty would have advanced. That too is speculation, but we&#8217;ve seen that electoral politics isn&#8217;t a path to salvation either.</p>

We&#8217;ve been playing this game for decades with nothing but loss after loss of liberty. &#8230; Suppose we actually did get Ron Paul as President, and had numerous victories in local elections, how much power will they really have within the global elite&#8217;s system? How many of our new representatives will be easily turned with bribes, black mail, and threats? How effective could they be against the onslaught of media propaganda against them?</p>

<p>Instead of <a href="http://www.meetup.com/tlcdallas/messages/8143014/">blaming the messenger</a>, I think the concern is genuine, though I don&#8217;t know anything about a &#8220;global elite.&#8221; The people who support violence against me live in my neighborhood. In any case, I responded.</p>
<blockquote><p>I feel that voting for people to represent your interests is one of the least effective means of achieving political success. It is always a lagging indicator of political opinion. The voting myth states that to have political influence, you must delegate it away. The alternative, I think, is to represent yourself and your interests.</p>
<p> Some refer to it as &#8220;direct action.&#8221; Taking direct action, rather than relying on a middleman to solve problems, has many advantages. You become familiar with the resources around you, building de facto institutions and learning your own capabilities or strengths.</p>
<p> Some specific examples of direct action are passing out flyers about issues that concern you rather than waiting on the media to give it attention. When someone raises money for a charity instead of asking a politician for tax dollars, that is direct action. When someone starts a book club rather than attending a government classroom for an education, that is taking action. One method of direct action, <a href="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Agorism">agorism</a>, seeks to build alternative institutions that deligitimize the state&#8217;s interference in that area of the marketplace. </p>
<p> Direct action does not spend time fighting over platforms or building a consensus, wasting time and money. Different groups can operate independently without the need for confrontation, unless their goals really are diametrically opposed. Direct action can be taken whenever you see fit. </p>
<p> These two methods of activism can be applied together. Think of all the hours wasted debating on who to vote for, what platform proposal to adopt, which bylaw to strike. Yet, voting itself takes just a few minutes.</p>
